I often tell parents, “ If you want to hear your kid talk about camp, ask them about their counselor or the theme that meant the most to them!”
One of my favorite sights of summer is looking down on the commons area of Ponderosa Lodge and seeing campers and counselors sitting side by side talking. They are talking about the speaker’s message from last night. They are talking about the Real Life or Program skit and the character they most relate to.
They are also talking about what life will look like when they go home. What will be different? Which bad habits will be thrown away? How will the 22 Day Challenge affect them? Camp is about relationships, and these relationships are formed all around in the many sacred spaces designed to facilitate camper-counselor interaction.
This year we plan to revamp the commons area to provide a more inviting environment for relational ministry to happen. In June we completed a new gas fire pit. Up next: new turf!
Improving this area will have an immeasurable impact on our campers. Creating an environment where a cabin group can sit together on the grass, and where campers and counselors can play together will become indispensable parts of our program for God’s transformational work.
We need your help! The estimated cost of new turf for this large area is $48,000. Will you prayerfully consider a gift toward this project? This space is used by more than 1,500 campers each summer and more than 4,000 campers year-round! That’s a lot of relationships!
I thank you in advance for your gift. We are grateful for your support and partnership.
By His grace,
Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries
P.S. Don’t forget to ask your camper about their counselor and favorite theme!
